April 4, 2019 – New York City used to be awash in newspapers. At one point, there were at least seven dailies, including The Herald Tribune (closed in 1966) and New York Newsday (closed in 1995). The internet was supposed to help news outlets find audiences, but sustainable business models remain elusive. The websites Gothamist and DNA Info were shuttered in 2017 after their staffs voted to unionize. (Gothamist later resurfaced at WNYC.)
